Special Issue

Announcing the CouFrac2024 Special Issue in IJRMMS

We are pleased to announce a Special Issue of the International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences (IJRMMS) dedicated to research presented at CouFrac2024. This Special Issue aims to feature high-quality papers that advance the understanding of coupled processes in fractured geological media.

Background

  • CouFrac 2018 (Wuhan) featured Special Issues across Computational Geosciences, Tunneling and Underground Space, Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, and Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, encompassing over 40 high-impact papers.
  • CouFrac 2020 (Seoul and Online) contributed 14 articles to a Special Issue in Geomechanics for Energy and the Environment (GETE).
  • CouFrac 2022 (Berkeley) included publications in Tunneling and Underground Space, Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, and Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.

CouFrac2024 Special Issue: Key Details

For CouFrac2024, we are proud to continue this tradition with a Special Issue in IJRMMS, targeting high-quality research papers that explore advancements in coupled thermal-hydro-mechanical-chemical processes.

Submission Process:

Authors of selected abstracts from CouFrac2024 (approx. 190 abstracts) will be invited to submit extended papers. Approximately 30 papers will be considered for full submission, with an anticipated 20-25 (up to 30) being accepted for publication. Submitted manuscripts will be reviewed by 2-3 reviewers and stringent quality control by the Guest Editors.

This special issue will be handled through Virtual Special Issue (VSI) to speed up the publication of individual articles. VSI paper does not need to wait for all the submissions to be in final status to be published. Once an article submitted to a VSI is accepted, it is published in a regular journal issue. This means that VSI papers are generally spread along a number of different printed issues. Therefore, the VSI is gradually built up as individual articles are published online. We expect that the whole process will be completed by October 1, 2025.

Timeline:

  • Submission Deadline: May 1, 2025
  • Revision Deadline: July 1, 2025
  • Publication of the special issue editorial: October 1, 2025 (editorial publication, individual papers to be published progressively throughout 2025)

Guest Editorial Team:

  • Managing Guest Editor: Hideaki Yasuhara
  • Guest Editors: Profs. Jonny Rutqvist, Ki-Bok Min, Carl Steefel, and Qinghua Lei

Invitation to Contribute

We encourage all CouFrac2024 participants to consider contributing to this Special Issue. This publication represents a valuable opportunity to share your insights with a global audience and contribute to advancing the understanding of complex coupled processes in geological media.
